So today was a typical Saturday morning, I got up, did some stuff around the house, then got my gear on to go for my long run. I kissed Amy goodbye, walked out my door and started my brisk walk to warmup, only this time there was something different. After a couple of minutes I had realized that I hadn't pressed play on my mp3 player, and at that moment decided I would conduct an experiment to see how long I could run without music. To my surprise I managed to complete my entire warmup, run, and cooldown without the sounds I've become accustomed to, and it was amazing! Now, this doesn't mean that I will no longer be listening to music when I run...that would just be insane, but I think I finally have an appreciation for what running "purists" are talking about when they say running with just yourself and your thoughts is the way to go. It's really soothing to be running early in the morning, with just the sound of nature and you...your breathing, your feet hitting the ground...it gives you time to just relax and enjoy the run. Like I said though, it was great, but not something I'm going to do all the time...I still need my tunes man!
Anyhow, here's the deets from today's run...
Outdoor - -7 degrees C - calm wind
Warmup - 5:01 - .31 miles (just under 1/2km)
Run - 60:11 - 5.48 miles (8.82 km)
Cooldown - 11:26 - .79 miles (1.3 km)
Yesterday I had my easy run, and I finally convinced Amy to come with me...the result wasn't as planned as it turned out to be windy and -13C, which wasn't very comfortable for her. We did manage to cover a few miles, but I don't think she'll be joining me again until the temp warms up a few degrees, like 20.
